Rita Silva is a Portuguese artist based between London and Porto working across photography and moving image. She holds an MA in Photography from the Royal College of Art.

Her practice is grounded in developing a visual language of matriarchal knowledge systems that are socially rendered invisible. Removing the distinct categorisation of the real and unreal, she is interested in how the illegibility of death and the process of dying complicates the metaphysics of the seen and unseen.

Informed by her upbringing in the north of rural Portugal where familial and folkloric belief systems were present, she is interested in the importance of secrecy within inherited healing practices. Oral history and performative gestures are processes used within her work to reflect on how memory is not individuated, but could be described and seen as porous.
